Hi. I am Renee. I was born with low vision. I have no diagnosis. Most eye care specialists have no idea what caused my low vision. It is what it is. I am legally blind.
I was raised to “be normal.” I attended neighborhood schools, graduated college, became a licensed elementary school teacher, and later on owned my own business. I have a fantastic and supportive husband, two wonderful grown children, and five beautiful grandchildren. I even have great in-laws! So my life is full. My vision, or lack of it, has not impeded my successes.
I wore thick glasses since the age of three. The eyeglasses help but they still leave me legally blind. That means I cannot see better than 20/200 in my best corrected eye. Frankly, I do not come close to that. I have never driven a car, but honestly, I never wanted to. Besides the prescription eyeglasses, though, I have never had any assistive devices; I do not even know if such things existed when I was young. I never saw what was written on the chalkboard in school, I struggled with reading material held close, I read street signs only if I were right next to them and they were hung lower than most. Yet, I cook, and clean, and crochet, and do most things normal-sighted people do.
It is only in the last however-many years that I learned about assistive devices. Dome magnifiers, lighted magnifiers, electronic magnifiers…who knew? CCTV’s! Accessible games, talking watches, and so much more. Just within the last year, I have had mobility training which included how to use a white cane, and I have attended a 3-day workshop for adaptive living. I even learned braille.
Because I have had decades to adapt to the world around me, and mostly with the help of ordinary things, I am here to share. I want to share what works for me, and learn what else is out there.
Let the sharing begin!
